LETTER

SEN. MUNNEER ADAM,SECRETARY CLASS REP'S FORUM, KUST WUDIL

AN OPEN LETTER TO THE VICE CHANCELLOR, KANO UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY WUDIL.

The vice chancellor,
Kano university of science
and technology wudil.

Dear sir,

THE SOCIOLOGY OF THE RECENT STUDENTS UNREST: CAUSES AND REMEDIES.

Please grant me the indulgence to write to you today on behalf of my self and fellow concern students, of kano university of science and technology wudil, to make known to you the sociology of the recent students uprising in our school and some possible solutions which I believe if followed will prevent the occurrence of such unruly behavior in the subsequent time.  Sir, I will not be mincing words to say that kano university of science and technology wudil under your enterprising and transformational leadership have witnessed tremendous changes and as such you have permanently launched your name in a gold by your unbeatable and unbreakable achievements. You are indeed a figure to reckon with, in kano university of science and technology wudil. I can imagine how it feels to see some people trying to destruct in one day what you have been building over the years. It is indeed very disheartening.

THE SOCIOLOGY OF THE UPRISING

Sir, the primary cause of this riot was not the death of FAROUK. I have been following the incidence since from the initial stage. This angry students hid themselves under a facade and decided to use the death of FAROUK as an opportunity to cast out their rage. I was in the scene of the riot and the constant slogan the students were enchanting was, “zalumcin dean, bamayi” and why was that?. The answer is not farfetched, during the incidence I overhead some students trying to explain their grieve to a fellow student.

THERE PLIGHT:

They claimed that:
> The dean students affairs always molest, harass and embarrass students in public, irrespective of his/her personality.
> He has Barned students completely from wearing short trousers, armless shirts and p-caps within the university premises.
> They also claim that mattresses are given to the female students only, except few among the male students who have long legs.
> Priority are given to the female students in the school clinic.
> Problem of results. That is, problem of absents and pending result that has bedeviled our school.
> Lastly, some students claim that the dean students affairs, told the sarkin ruwa of wudil, not to commence the search for the dead body of late FAROUK till the next day. This rumour is the main causative agent that triggers the mindset of the students to start the riot.  However, some of their claims were not true because I was there with the dean when the bad news reached to him, he acted as fast as he could.
In my opinion, the effort of the dean to inculcate the spirit of moral values among students should be appreciated and not misinterpreted as the saying goes, “degree is for character and learning”. It is a fact that can not be disputed that there is a decline in the level of discipline and morality in our school, students flagrantly conduct themselves in unruly manner, they do not have respect for the rules and regulations guiding civilized behaviour in the school.

SOME FACTORS THAT ARE ATTRIBUTABLE TO THE UNREST.

Few weeks before the uprising two things happened, that suppose to be an eye opener to the school management. That is.
1. A week before the incidence some students shouted at the dean students affairs in the university premises. They were enchanting the same slogan that was said during the riot.
2. In the same week, some of the security personnel of the university who exist for the maintenance of cohesion and order, who exist to make sure that rules and regulations of the university are being followed by students, were also not an exception. Some students shouted at them in my presence and they were enchanting the same slogan “bamayi, bamayi”.
The school management shouldn't have taken this incidence likely, which I firmly believe that this two incidence were not a coincidence, it was a sign that something is wrong somewhere.

SOME OF THE CAUSES IN MY OPINION:
> Non responsive nature of the university: The students unrest is not solely caused by students mistakes. In several occasions the  students keep complaining, that they want to include something in there curriculum or have some problem with the faculty and they complain against it to the university but this complains are ignored.
> And also Poor motivation of staff who have a major obligation for the moral character and well being of the students.

MY STAKE:
It is based on the above (being a student of educational technology, a students activist, and executive and bona fide member of the class representative forum and a loyal student under the umbrella of your leadership, that I feel the need to make known to you the following suggestions.

1. Policies and activities of the university council should be revisited to include more participation and input of students.

2. It is an incontrovertible fact, that the students of today are the foundation stones on which tomorrow's government will be built. As such the school management should come up with activities in order to inject new consciousness in the students for more effective participation.

3. Parents alone cannot cope with the enormous burden of the social integration of the students, especially in this period of moral rearmament. And as such I suggest that when redesigning the curriculum of the school, more emphasis should be laid on hidden curriculum.

4. FINDING THE ROOT CAUSE:
Every undisciplined done by the students has reason due to which it is done. It is the duty of the university management to find the root cause behind indiscipline created by students, and if that reason is genuine and curable, then it should be resolved in time.

5. INCLUSION OF MORAL VALUES IN THE UNIVERSITY CURRICULUM: Discipline needs to be taught to the students from the very beginning. It cannot be taught in one day. So it would be better if courses of moral values are included in the school curriculum from the very beginning. The students should be taught how to behave with elders, how to solve issues in a polite way, how to manage anger and how to avoid fights.

6. REGULAR VICE CHANCELLOR/STUDENTS MEETINGS:
In an institution there are many decisions which need to be taken for the well being of the students. It will be appreciable if the decisions are taken by having a discussion with the students. Every level have a class representative who will put forward the advises and needs of other students in front of the school management whenever the meetings are organized. This will also enhance the relationship between the students and the management.

7. COUNSELING: The university should organize frequent counseling for students.

8. AVOID IMMEDIATE DECISIONS:
The university should avoid taking immediate decisions. Before applying a new rule on the students, a proper notice should be displayed ten to fifteen days before the rule is to be enforced. In this way the students will get time to think upon the new rule and present their views on it.

THINGS TO NOTE:
> Most students engaged in the unrest are withdrawn students.
> Most of them are drug addict.

During the unrest me and the health director SUG made an attempt to talk to some of them but nobody was kind enough to listen. In the process, a group of five men came after us holding a weapon, to which we have run for our lifes. That is to show that they weren't doing for the students but for a reason that is best know to them.
conclusively, this letter is informed by my selfless concern for kano university of science and technology wudil, and not in any way motivated by parochial or trivial concerns and it is intended to be an eye opener. And I do hope you would take it as a good and well intentioned gesture aimed at assisting your administration. After all what matters is substance of the letter and not the form.
I am in my part motivated by the words of jean-Baptiste poquelin who said ..
“ it is not only for what we do that we are held responsible, but also for what we do not do”.
And I pray that the Almighty assist you in delivering the burden on your shoulder.

YOURS,
